my flag is longer than your flag

Apparently 9 de Julio has done nothing for Argentines’ feelings of, uh, inadequacy; not only do they need to have the world’s widest street, but the world’s longest flag as well.

Already 13 kilometers long, this flag isn’t even close to being completed– the plan is to add to it until 2012, the 200th anniversary of the flag’s creation. Some sections have been made on-site, in Rosario (home to the Monumento a la Bandera), while others have been made across the country and even one in Italy.

Clarin, which covered the story, doesn’t exactly explain why the flag is being made, which makes me believe that there is no reason for this besides sheer Argentine pride. At least we got a holiday (and three day weekend) out of it.– REBECCA
